6 Food Documentaries You Should Watch Right Now

Love Food? Want to eat better?

I’ve listed some of my favourite food documentaries that educate as well as entertain.

Of all the food documentaries out there, I have seen many. Here’s a round up of my favourites that I’ve seen in recent years. If you love food and you’re trying to eat better, these food documentaries can give you the extra push you need.

That Sugar Film

That Sugar Film follows filmmaker, Damon Gameau, as he examines Australia’s relationship to sugar. What’s most insightful about this one is that he’s not looking at junk food but rather at “so called” healthy foods. You might already know that nearly every pre-packaged food from breakfast cereal to pasta sauce contains sugar, but do you how much?

This will have you swearing off sugar and processed foods! It’s a real eye opener about the amount of sugar that’s in food we often perceive to be savoury or healthy.

The Truth About Carbs

A BBC documentary. No points for guessing what it’s about. Presenter, Xand Van Tulleken, is a medical doctor. He breaks down pretty much everything you need to know about carbs in a no nonsense way that’s easy to understand.

You can currently watch the hour long documentary via the link above.

Forks Over Knives

If you’ve been trying to switch to a plant based diet but are finding some resistance then this might be the one for you. A bit over sensationalised in my opinion but there are certainly some excellent points made in the documentary.

The Game Changers

I watched The Game Changers recently with my meat eating boyfriend and it had him swearing to eat less meat. Similar to Forks Over Knives, it examines the benefits of a plant based diet.

Cooked

As the title might suggest, this is more about cooking than nutrition.

Rather than a feature length documentary, this is a 4 part Netflix series that examines our relationship with food from the beginning of time right up to present day.

I’ve watched it at least twice. In fact I’ve watched most things on this list at least twice, but Cooked is one of my favourites. The quality of the production is beautiful and it will give you a new appreciation for honest home cooked food.

Fed Up

Their tagline: “Congress says pizza is a vegetable.” Looks at the American food system.. It’s scary stuff!

BONUS: Ted Talk

Jamie Oliver | Teach Every Child About Food

Only have 20 mins? Everyone should watch this Ted Talk.

Jamie Oliver is a chef and activist from the UK, on a mission to teach families about eating better and living healthier lives.

“Fact: Diet-related disease is the biggest killer in the United States, right now, here today. This is a global problem. It’s a catastrophe. It’s sweeping the world. England is right behind you, as usual.”

“My wish is for you to help a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, to inspire families to cook again, and to empower people everywhere to fight obesity.”

That round up my list of top food documentaries. I hope you enjoy.

Did I miss any of your favourites? Let me know 🙂
